Sophie Kahn doing bronze statuary

Monday 6th November, 2023 - Bruce Sterling

Dear friends and colleagues,

If you are in New York next week, I’d love to see you at the unveiling ceremony for my sculpture Portrait of t. This work has been commissioned by the Art Students League of New York, presented as part of the Works in Public program, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Our Gates, by Marco Palli, will also be unveiled.

The two sculptures are located in Riverside Park North, at West 145th Street at the Hudson River Greenway, overlooking the river.

The unveiling ceremony will take place on Thursday November 9th at 3pm. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at Sofrito at 679 Riverside Drive at 4pm.

R2HW+78 New York on Google Maps will direct you there. The nearest station is the 145th Street 1. From there, walk west along 145th Street all the way to the river. The street continues, and becomes an overpass that leads down the park. Turn right and take the stairs or elevator (please note the elevator is out of service this week but should be repaired for the event – please reach out to confirm) down at the entrance to Riverside Park North. You can also call me on 347 342 2970 if you are lost!

Portrait of t., nickel-plated bronze from 3D print + 3D scan, life size, 2023 (artist’s rendering)

Below are some photos from the production process. This has been my first major public art commission and my first time working in bronze at this scale, so it’s been an extraordinary learning process…

I’d love to hear back from you and hear more about what you are working on, whether or not you’re able to make it to the event! And of course if you aren’t able to visit the park on November 9th, I would be very happy to arrange for a private tour of the work in the park another time, so please get in touch. I’m currently on a residency at Marble House Project in Vermont and will only be back in the city on the day of the unveiling, but then I’ll be back in New York again from the 20th of November.

best, Sophie
