The<br \/>\ninescapable problem with making is that it trades out the cultural, artistic,<br \/>\nand controversial components of DIY culture for a more family-\u00ad friendly for-<br \/>\nmat for a mass audience palate. The danger of the maker movement is that<br \/>\nit approaches engagement with technology through the totalizing lens of<br \/>\nMake magazine\u2019s lifestyle tech brand, neglecting the many older strands of<br \/>\nelectronic art that it is inspired by. \u201cMaker culture\u201d has been useful as a term<br \/>\nto bring a diverse range of people together, but it is relatively incomplete<br \/>\nbecause it is generally void of the complexity, history, and thorny political<br \/>\npossibilities within art and design. In response, this book articulates one of<br \/>\nthe core strands left out of this Martha-\u00ad Stewartization of DIY into maker<br \/>\nculture that reaches back nearly a hundred years: DIY electronic art. This<br \/>\nbook naturally shares an affinity with other technologically oriented coun-<br \/>\ntercultures, like the history of hacker culture, the free software movement,<br \/>\nexperimental and noncommercial designers, and the FabLab movement.<br \/>\nHowever, my emphasis is primarily on contemporary artistic practice, a<br \/>\ntheme sorely absent from official histories.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at these influences on the contemporary idea of making<br \/>\nhelps us see their historical influences and the morphology of the concept<br \/>\nover time. DIY electronic art revives these lessons from the past to point a<br \/>\nnew path forward for artistic practice and design work. The maker move-<br \/>\nment\u2019s technological fetishization will disappear as fast as the waning hype<br \/>\naround 3D printing: nobody is really excited by 3D printing anymore any-<br \/>\nhow.
