These companies dominate through\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d massive infrastructure, extractive data practices, and profit-driven design, often reinforcing\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d global inequality and ecological harm. Even open-source challengers frequently depend on\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d corporate-scale resources. This session asks: What alternatives are not just imaginable, but\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d already underway?\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d We examine how cooperatives\u2014and, more broadly, the solidarity economy\u2014are beginning to\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d intervene in AI\u2019s development. Cooperatives alone already employ nearly 10% of the global\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d workforce and represent a global movement with real economic and political weight. While\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d acknowledging the enormous barriers, including centralized infrastructure and capital, we\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d consider how connections to public digital infrastructure efforts in India (with all their\u202c<br \/>\n\u202d limitations) and emerging frameworks in Europe might offer viable pathways forward.
