We’re back with our monthly newsletters. We have a solo exhibition of Dani Ploeger coming up, Destructive Circuits (opening 28 March) with also an Evening of… (5 April) and a new publication (launch at 11 April) connected to it. There’s two open calls: one for the yearly Summer Sessions residencies, and one for XR-projects within the Realities in Transition program.<\/p>\n

Dani Ploeger\u2019s exhibition Destructive Circuits brings together work from his long-running research into the appropriation of everyday technology to create weapons. As part of his Fellowship with V2_, Dani has studied archival material, spoken with academics, conducted experiments in collaboration with other artists and interviewed witnesses about the recent history of so-called Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The exhibition features trigger systems, timer devices, a sci-fi film and an interactive sculpture that blows up.<\/p>\n

The book launch will be live-streamed and preceded by a virtual exhibition tour.<\/p>\n

The Evening of Explosions

\nDani Ploeger will be blown-up during a film shoot on the street in front of V2_, in collaboration with Lieven Slabbinck (Divi-Divi special effects, Antwerp) and Jochem Weststrate (camera). The shoot will be accessible as a live audience event, followed by a conversation about real and simulated IEDs with Dani Ploeger, Lieven Slabbinck and a former guerrilla fighter of the Rojava Revolution.<\/p>\n
Open Call: Summer Sessions 2024

The Summer Sessions are short-term international art and technology residencies for emerging artists and designers. A network of cultural organizations all over the world sponsors and hosts the residencies. Every summer we offer early-career artists and designers support so they can take part in production residencies abroad. If selected, you will receive access to the facilities of the host institution, expert support and an opportunity to present the resulting work at a public event. A budget will be provided to cover travel, accommodation, materials and a stipend.<\/p>\n
Each Summer Sessions residency lasts approximately eight weeks and takes place between July and September. During this period you will develop your project from concept to presentable work, ready to show.<\/p>\n

Realities in Transition: Open call to co-create an XR experience

We invite artists, designers, 3D modelers, illustrators, directors, writers, photographers, sound-designers, creative coders and (web) developers, to join the co-creation of a new XR experience. In a hybrid residency, starting online and during the summer months of 2024 at V2_ Lab in Rotterdam, we intend to reimagine and challenge conventional notions of XR. The project aims to use open source and free access tools. Throughout the production, participants will receive guidance from experts, in-house developers, project managers, and curators to foster a highly productive working atmosphere. The results of the residency will be presented on 8 August at V2_ and at Ars Electronica Festival from 4 September to 8 September 2024.<\/p>\n

Meta.Morf is the Trondheim Biennale for Art and Technology, an international gathering initiated and organized by TEKS \u2013 Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre. Meta.Morf 2024 \u2013 [up]Loaded Bodies explores the physical and technological body caught between virtual ecstasy and digital obesity. The program has been co-curated by V2_, and takes place first in Trondheim, Norway \u2013 with a.o. an Opening Festival from 17\u201320 April. Technological Accidents, Accidental Technologies

\u201cEach period of technological development, with its instruments and machines, brings its share of specialized accidents\u201d (Virilio). But a reversal could also be true: accidents produce technologies. In this publication we inquire into a technology of accidents, but also into the forms of power and authority that accidents materialize. What are the specific accidents of \u2013 call them what you wish: artificial intelligence, machine learning, enhanced pattern recognition \u2013 systems? What do accidents tell us about the technology that generates them? How are these technological failures tied up with the creation and recreation of economic rationalities? And do the events that come to mind really qualify as \u201caccidents,\u201d or are they rather extended forms of functionality, which may be undesired, but not dysfunctional in the way that the derailment of a train appears dysfunctional?<\/p>\n
