\ntourist route of non-touristic places.<\/p>\n
With Alex Saum-Pascual, Digital Artist, Poet, and Associate Professor of
\nContemporary Spanish Literature and New Media, University of California,
\nBerkeley; Jill Miller, Visual Artist and Assistant Professor, Department of
\nArt Practice, University of California, Berkeley; Asma Kazmi,
\nResearch-Based Artist and Associate Professor, Department of Art Practice,
\nUniversity of California, Berkeley; Beth Piatote, Writer, Playwright,
\nAssociate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, and Director of
\nArts Research Center, University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n
Like any other digital technology, or the Internet itself, the current
\nexplosion of AI research and applications relies on their conceptualization
\nas immaterial technologies. The idea of clean, ethereal networks whose data
\nis stored in a bodiless Cloud is nothing but a fallacy that hides thousands
\nof miles of fiber optic cables, innumerable data centers, and increasing
\nglobal energy consumption. The Internet that feeds and fuels AI is made up
\nof a series of materials, constructions, and interventions that are hidden
\nfrom the naked eye; from inconspicuous buildings in the centers of our
\ncities, to urban beaches where the undersea cables that connect countries
\nand continents are buried under the sand.<\/p>\n
\u201cInternet Tour\u201d is an initiative by Barcelona-based artist Mario
\nSantamar\u00eda, whose successful bus tours have explored the hidden digital
\ninfrastructures of many European cities. Now in Berkeley, in collaboration
\nwith Alex Saum-Pascual, and together with the Berkeley Center for New Media
\nand the Arts Research Center, we\u2019ll embark on a collective exploration of
\nthe world\u2019s preeminent technology hub, the San Francisco Bay Area, as we
\nunearth its Internet infrastructure. Traveling by bus and on foot across
\nBerkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland, this guided tour will also feature
\npoetic and artistic experiences. We\u2019ll visit the places through which our
\nvoices, images, cryptocurrencies, and future intelligences circulate as
\ncursed matter that flows from the same wound. Where to go from there?<\/p>\n
An Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium special event, presented with
\nthe Arts Research Center and as part of BCNM’s Critical Infrastructures and
\nCultural Analytics program. Co-sponsored by Institut Ramon Llull, the Peder
\nSather Center for Advanced Study, and the Department of Spanish and
\nPortuguese at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n
Also part of the exhibition: *More Than Meets AI.* Curated by Jill Miller,
\nEamon O’Kane, and Scott Rettberg, this exhibition emerges from a Peder
\nSather Center for Advanced Study research project titled \u201cTransformation
\nand Disruption: The Challenges and Opportunities of AI for Human
\nCreativity.\u201d The project is focused on the aesthetic and cultural impacts
\nof AI, and will result both in art exhibitions and research cooperation
\nbetween the University of Bergen\u2019s Center for Digital Narrative and UC
\nBerkeley.
