NOME is pleased to announce the group exhibition Memorabilia<\/em>, featuring works by Cian Dayrit, Priscilla Dobler-Dzul, Giovani Fabi\u00e1n Guerrero, and Voluspa Jarpa. The term memorabilia refers to objects associated with memorable people and events. While these items tend to pay tribute to dominant historical narratives, sports figures, or celebrities, the artists in Memorabilia commemorate events that are often ignored or denigrated, such as the extraction of natural resources, land grabbing, dispossession, and the struggle for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

In No Flag Large Enough: Colonizer<\/em>, Cian Dayrit <\/strong>focuses on the hidden histories of the Philippine islands. He signposts and adds vernacular words to his work such as \u201cmanlulupig\u201d\u2014a Tagalog word that means colonizer\u2014on the forehead a person resembling\u00a0 Magellan, who colonized the island of Cebu 500 years ago.<\/p>\n

Associations between the treatment of land and women\u2019s bodies inspired Priscilla Dobler-Dzul<\/strong>\u2019s embroidery Las Am\u00e9ricas, nuestro cuerpo, nuestra tierra y nuestra historia<\/em>. The work comments upon how the privatization of indigenous land, public sectors, and medical sectors all contribute to the exploitation of natural resources and increased inequality, particularly for women of color. In the words of the artist, \u201cLas Am\u00e9ricas is based around our mythologies, our bodies and stories. Stop erasing our bodies and redlining our lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giovani Fabi\u00e1n Guerrero<\/strong>\u2019s artworks reveal collective memories of his Cher\u00e1n community (Mexico). In\u00a05 talamontes retenidos<\/em> (5 seized loggers),\u00a0he recalls the action led by women defending the forests from timber trafficking on April 15, 2011. On that day, five illegal loggers were caught, bound to a tree, and nearly lynched by the local community, which is afflicted by corruption and forestry crimes. In\u00a0Memorabilia<\/em>,\u00a0he exhibits a large drawing and assemblage from a series inspired by his native community\u2019s struggle for autonomy.<\/p>\n

Voluspa Jarpa<\/strong>\u2019s The Last Moment of the Democratic Women\u2019s Association<\/em> emerged from her research into a 19th-century Austrian feminist political movement that demanded more equality, labor rights, and education for women. Inspired by an 1848 lithography entitled The Lips of the Democratic Women\u2019s Club<\/em>, which presented women\u2019s liberation as a disastrous end to social order, Jarpa\u2019s series of paintings draws connections between salacious cartoons from the 19th century and contemporary pornography, among other representations of the female body and sexuality.<\/p>\n

NOME freut sich, die Gruppenausstellung Memorabilia<\/em> anzuk\u00fcndigen, mit Werken von Cian Dayrit, Priscilla Dobler-Dzul, Giovani Fabi\u00e1n Guerrero und Voluspa Jarpa. Der Begriff Memorabilia bezieht sich auf Objekte, die mit bemerkenswerten Personen und Ereignissen in Verbindung gebracht werden. W\u00e4hrend diese Gegenst\u00e4nde in der Regel dominanten historischen Erz\u00e4hlungen, Sportler*innen oder Prominenten Tribut zollen, erinnern die K\u00fcnstler*innen in Memorabilia an Ereignisse, die oft ignoriert oder verharmlost werden, wie beispielsweise den Abbau nat\u00fcrlicher Ressourcen, Landraub, Enteignung und den Kampf f\u00fcr Frauenrechte.<\/p>\n

In No Flag Large Enough: Colonizer<\/em> befasst sich Cian Dayrit<\/strong> mit der verborgenen Geschichte der philippinischen Inseln. Giovani Fabi\u00e1n Guerreros<\/strong> Werke artikulieren spirituelle Beziehungen durch \u00fcbermenschliche Identit\u00e4ten: Gottheiten, Verb\u00fcndete, Ahnen, Tiere, Heilpflanzen, die Milpa, Pilze und pr\u00e4hispanische Figuren, die aus der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart kommen. In Memorabilia zeigt er eine Reihe von Zeichnungen und Assemblagen, die von der Abholzung seines Heimatlandes durch Agrarkonzerne beeinflusst sind.<\/p>\n
