NOME is pleased to announce Of Daughters and Dreams<\/em>, a solo exhibition by the artist Priscilla Dobler Dzul. Her paintings, sculpture, video, and performance works have addressed notions of belonging, borders, alienation, and social inequality as they relate to the history of migration and indigenous cultures. Her most recent works comprise large-scale paintings, tapestries, and glazed, painted sculptures inspired by the bold colors and forms of Mayan mythological oral stories and Alebrije folk art that represent all elements of life: air, water, earth, and fire.<\/p>\n

Her ebullient canvases depict expansive landscapes featuring a range of hybrid animals, human figures, and plant life. These invented worlds teem with dreamlike visions, sensual pleasures, and collisions of different life forms and genders\u2014yet many of these tableaux nonetheless bristle with an undercurrent of darkness: brutality, violence, death, and turbulent transformations. Para\u00edso Perdido<\/em> depicts a paradise of sexual pleasure, boxing, and struggle for reproductive rights with the jaguar goddess overseeing it all. In Jaguar Protector, sue\u00f1os demon\u00edacos<\/em>, a three-headed woman encroaches upon a reclining nude figure protected by a jaguar with a snake protruding from its mouth. Inspired by recurring dreams, the painting seeks new forms for ancestors who have had their stories, bodies, and voices erased to speak in the present and future. Her highly glazed clay sculptures introduce fantastical creatures who live between worlds\u2014between the ancient and contemporary, animal and human.<\/p>\n

Donna Haraway describes a trickster figure as someone \u201cthat might turn a stacked deck into a potent set of wild cards for refiguring possible worlds.” Dobler Dzul adopts the literary and mythic device of the trickster in her multi-media works to address the violence, segregation, and cultural erasure that threatens indigenous Latinx identity and knowledge. The figures that appear in her works are boundary crossers set on disrupting intersecting forms of oppression with their pleasurable, playful games.<\/p>\n

Priscilla Dobler Dzul<\/strong> (b. 1985) lives and work in Tacoma, Washington. Her work has recently been exhibited at Project for Empty Space, Newark, NJ; A.I.R Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Consulate of Mexico, Seattle, WA; The Northwest African American Museum, Seattle, WA; NARS Foundation, Brooklyn, NY; 125 Maiden Lane, NYC, NY; Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, WA; King Street Station, Seattle, WA; The Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Ana, CA and Decentered Gallery, Puebla, Mexico. Dobler Dzul was additionally a 2014 recipient of Grants for Artist Projects from the Artist Trust, 2015 Bailey Award, 2016 Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship, 2017 & 2021 Tacoma Artist Initiative Program Grantee, 2021 Puffin Foundation Awardee and a Robert B McMillen Fellowship. She received her MFA in Sculpture from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2013.<\/p>\n

NOME ist erfreut Of Daughters and Dreams<\/em> anzuk\u00fcndigen, eine Einzelausstellung der K\u00fcnstlerin Priscilla Dobler Dzul. Ihre Gem\u00e4lde, Skulpturen, Videos und Performances befassen sich mit Begriffen wie Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit, Grenzen, Entfremdung und sozialer Ungleichheit im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte von Migration und indigenen Kulturen. Para\u00edso Perdido<\/em> zeigt die Darstellung eines Paradieses der sexuellen Lust, des Boxens und des Kampfes um reproduktive Rechte, und die Jaguar-G\u00f6ttin, die alles \u00fcberwacht. In Jaguar Protector, Sue\u00f1os Demon\u00edacos <\/em>greift eine dreik\u00f6pfige Frau eine liegende nackte Figur an, die von einem Jaguar besch\u00fctzt wird, aus dessen Maul eine Schlange ragt. Inspiriert von wiederkehrenden Tr\u00e4umen sucht das Gem\u00e4lde nach neuen Formen f\u00fcr Ahnen, deren Geschichten, K\u00f6rper und Stimmen ausgel\u00f6scht wurden, um in der Gegenwart und Zukunft zu sprechen. Ihre stark glasierten Tonskulpturen zeigen fantastische Kreaturen, die zwischen den Welten leben – zwischen dem Alten und dem Zeitgen\u00f6ssischen, zwischen Tier und Mensch.<\/p>\n

Donna Haraway beschreibt eine Tricksterfigur als jemanden, “der ein Kartenspiel in einen machtvollen Satz an Jokern f\u00fcr die Neugestaltung m\u00f6glicher Welten verwandeln kann”. Dobler Dzul greift in ihren multimedialen Arbeiten auf die literarische und mythische Figur des Tricksters zur\u00fcck, um Gewalt, Segregation und kulturelle Ausl\u00f6schung zu thematisieren, die die Identit\u00e4t und das Wissen der indigenen lateinamerikanischen Bev\u00f6lkerung bedrohen.
