{"id":128,"date":"2021-06-08T18:26:06","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T17:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/toshareproject.it\/artmakerblog\/?p=128"},"modified":"2021-06-15T19:00:18","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T18:00:18","slug":"touring-the-wunderkammer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toshareproject.it\/artmakerblog\/touring-the-wunderkammer\/","title":{"rendered":"Touring the Wunderkammer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A &#8220;Wunderkammer&#8221; or &#8220;wonder chamber&#8221; was a closet full of wondrous<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>oddities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They flourished four hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When scientific disciplines matured,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and taxonomies improved, then &#8220;wonder chambers&#8221; went out of intellectual style.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But today &#8220;wonder chambers&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>make sense for displays of &#8220;emerging media&#8221; or &#8220;transmedia&#8221; or &#8220;new media,&#8221; when lines of definition don&#8217;t exist, or are blurred on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carla Gannis teaches &#8220;multidisciplinary experimentation&#8221; in Brooklyn at the NYU school of Integrated Design &amp; Media, so Professor Gannis has \u00a0rather a lot of material to stuff into wunderkammers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These trophies and\/or monsters include Carla Gannis herself, who likes to pose as her augmented avatars &#8220;Lucille Trackball&#8221; and &#8220;C.A.R.L.A. G.A.N.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gannis wunderkammers are 3D simulated environments, but they&#8217;re not multiplayer games or big urban-scale metaverses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, they&#8217;re intensely personal little chambers, collections of curios or creations that reflect the Gannis &#8220;Internet Gothic&#8221; sensibility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why would a contemporary artist want to construct a personal &#8220;wunderkammer?&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What good is a little 3D room where avatars can maneuver and \u00a0pivot and rotate?<\/p>\n<p>One can imagine a widely disorganized number of reasons to create a disorganized wunderkammer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Platforms exist now<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>where it&#8217;s possible to do this without coding everything from scratch. &#8220;Hubs&#8221; from Mozilla, for instance, is a Carla Gannis favorite locale.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hubs.mozilla.com\/VCBH2rP\/recollecting-futures\">https:\/\/hubs.mozilla.com\/VCBH2rP\/recollecting-futures<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. If you do build a private art-world in a box, you might sell that to collectors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Such as this Carla Gannis miniature &#8220;peep box&#8221; on the Feral Files site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/feralfile.com\/artworks\/peep-o-rama-r4s?fromExhibition=the-bardo-unpacking-the-real-a2j\">https:\/\/feralfile.com\/artworks\/peep-o-rama-r4s?fromExhibition=the-bardo-unpacking-the-real-a2j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. Imagine that you have a weblog, like this one, rather than a &#8220;wunderkammer.&#8221; People will arrive on the blog&#8217;s separate pages through social media recommendations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These have a viral power-law distribution, meaning that some weblog posts might catch the eyes of ten thousand readers while others, which<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>may well be more important and interesting, might only get ten.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You&#8217;ll likely end up creating clickbait, since that&#8217;s what the format rewards.<\/p>\n<p>A wunderkammer, by contrast, is a coherent entity like a gallery; it has foot-tracks through it; it&#8217;s an experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-129\" 1898w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People can socialize inside wunderkammers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 2021, after a year of plague, people are weary of Zoom calls.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A 3D social environment breaks the tedium of confronting a flat screen full of talking heads.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even if you&#8217;re not manning your own wunderkammer, you might, if you are Carla Gannis, build a fun 3D avatar of yourself that can dance around automatically and cheer people up. \u00a0If you&#8217;ve been teaching school on screens for a year, that may be an act of mercy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-130\" src=\"https:\/\/toshareproject.it\/artmakerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/carla2-1024x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"530\" 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Suppose that you&#8217;re a collector of &#8220;media art.&#8221; To date, no one has ever invented any reasonable way to display this plethora of highly variegated stuff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You might well<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>collect a wondrous arsenal of (for instance)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>jpegs, video clips, 3D models, creative code-art, pixelated graphics, glitch art, video performances, animated cartoons, stop-action claymation, trading cards, augmented Instagram selfies, architectural 3D renders, Photoshop paintings, memes, gifs, etc etc\u2026. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These uncategorizable wonders are quite hard to file and organize, especially when they exist as monstrous transmedia hybrids and chimeric combinations, such as an architectural 3D render with some art and videos inside of it (a wunderkammer).<\/p>\n<p>These variegated wonders need a chamber of some kind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most likely, you yourself have forgotten that you own them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They&#8217;re stuck on a thumb drive, or you parked them in &#8220;the cloud.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So you have no way to take pleasure in them, or to show them to your friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A wunderkammer offers an option.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-131\" src=\"https:\/\/toshareproject.it\/artmakerblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/carla3-1024x526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"526\" 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you already have a wunderkammer, you might loan parts of it to your colleagues.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then you can transform from a private gallerist to the mistress of a wunderkammer salon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe you can have events, and make some new friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since trolls and censors haven&#8217;t yet figured out how to hack wunderkammers, you might enjoy some relative intellectual and social freedom in there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although the historic &#8220;wunderkammers&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of the baroque era may seem disorganized and messy to us, they were not failures in their own era.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some were famous attractions, and they became the fertile compost heaps of real sciences, which appeared when scholars were able to separate some transmissible knowledge from a cluster of random marvels. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So your modern wunderkammer might become an incubation chamber, or a greenhouse, for some tender new development that makes more sense later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-132\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Digital art is frail, and in an era of climate disaster, physical art can be even frailer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you take the trouble to arrange and design a wunderkammer, you might also take the trouble to methodically catalog your own art holdings, and store copies of them in multiple time-zones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In some day of woe<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>you&#8217;ll be glad for this act of discipline and foresight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large in the wonder chamber \u2014 or rather, I had an avatar floating in there \u2014 as Professor Gannis and two of her colleagues described what they were doing with their personal wunderkammers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That was edifying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That was educational.
