The Turinese art-world complex

Tuesday 7th November, 2023 - Bruce Sterling

*The culture-industry foundations and institutions in Torino are getting more muscular. There’s Compagnia di San Paolo (they’re 460 years old), but there’s also Pinacoteca Agnelli, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Fondazione Merz, the Galleria d’Italia e Camera, the OGR (which used to be giant railway repair yard, and now is some giant techno-cultural barn), the GAM museum, the MAO museum, the Venaria Palace complex, the Castello di Rivoli… and of course the huge National Cinema Museum in the most picturesque building in town.

*I’m frankly losing count of all of them, but that doesn’t mean they lose count of one another. In a town that used to belong heart and soul to the auto industry, they’ve become quite a serious culture-industry business sector.
