*How smart can a wallet be?
A Safer Future for Digital Art Ownership
Dear Feral File Community,
At Feral File, our mission is to make digital art as essential to daily life as books or music. As part of this mission, we’re evolving the Feral File app to focus exclusively on making it easy to display and organize digital art. To achieve this, we’ve phased out wallet transaction features in the latest version of our Android and iOS apps.
If your Feral File app currently manages assets like artwork or cryptocurrency, rest assured that these assets remain secure, with the same level of protection we’ve provided for the past two years. There’s no immediate need to take action unless you plan to transact.
If you do plan to transact, the app will guide you through safely backing up your recovery phrase and moving your assets to one of the wallets we recommend. This ensures you remain in full control of your assets whenever you need to manage them. If you have any questions or need assistance, our team is here to help. Just reach out via private chat in the app.
Moving forward, here are some best practices:
1. Use Hot Wallets to Transact:
For purchasing digital art, we recommend:
MetaMask for Ethereum-based transactions.
Temple for Tezos-based transactions.
Both are trusted, widely used, and designed for interacting with marketplaces. However, they are not intended for long-term storage.
2. Store Art in a Secure Wallet:
After purchasing, we strongly recommend transferring your pieces to more secure storage:
Ledger (Self-Custody): A trusted hardware wallet that keeps your assets offline and protected from online threats. While it remains a single-key solution, it mitigates many risks associated with hot wallets.
Tholos (Multisigner Self-Custody): Advanced custody solution, eliminating single points of failure and compromise.
Why this matters:
Single-key wallets, while common, are becoming increasingly risky due to their vulnerability to compromise. With Ethereum advancing features like account abstraction, the future of digital ownership lies in smarter, more secure wallet designs.
We’re proud of the wallet we built, but it’s time to move on. By focusing our energy where it matters most—on the art—we can better serve the entire Feral File community, from collectors to curators to artists.
Why this matters:
We’ll continue supporting you with best practices for buying, storing, and enjoying digital art. Together, we’re shaping a future where art is more accessible, secure, and central to daily life.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Best,
The Feral File Team
