Rhizome welcomes the Metaverse

Monday 14th June, 2021 - Bruce Sterling

If there is anything left of metaverses after ten years, probably they’ll be preserved at Rhizome.

Rhizome champions born-digital art and culture through commissions, exhibitions, scholarship, and digital preservation. Founded by artist Mark Tribe as a listserve including some of the first artists to work online, Rhizome has played an integral role in the history of contemporary art engaged with digital technologies and the internet.

Since 2003, Rhizome has been an affiliate in residence at the New Museum in New York City. Founded in 1977, the New Museum is a leading destination for new art and new ideas. Together, New Museum, Rhizome, and NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator founded by New Museum in 2014, explore the future of contemporary art and technology.

Welcome to the Metaverse II

On Wednesday June 16 at 8pm EDT, Rhizome will host a conversation about new virtual form of collaboration, and exchange via the blockchain and decentralized platforms. The panel features four practitioners who are engaged in ongoing work with social tokens, DAOs, and NFTs: Marguerite deCourcelle, artist and CEO of Blockade Games; Kevin McCoy, artist and founder of Monegraph; Trevor McFedries, founder of Brud and Friends With Benefits; and Rhea Myers, artist, hacker, and writer. The event will be available on Zoom with pre-registration here.

This event is the second in a two-part program that began with Aria Dean and David Rudnick in conversation on Wednesday May 19. A recording of that conversation is available on Rhizome’s Vimeo channel.

This event is presented in conjunction with “World on a Wire,” the first exhibition in a new partnership between Hyundai Motor Company and Rhizome of the New Museum to showcase leading digital art globally.

Congratulations to panelists and NFT vanguards Kevin McCoy and Rhea Myers on their inclusion in Sotheby’s Natively Digital NFT sale, which ended yesterday, June 10. McCoy’s work, Quantum is was minted during 7×7 on May 2, 2014 and is widely regarded as the first NFT.
