We hope that you have all had a good start to the new year, one in which many media art highlights await you once again at the HEK.
To kick things off, we are showcasing the multifaceted Swiss media art scene by presenting the winners of the Pax Art Awards 2023. The exhibition «UBERMORGEN, Johanna Müller & Giulia Essyad. Swiss Media Art – Pax Art Awards 2023»presents a selection of works by award-winning artists in the form of three concurrent solo exhibitions.
The 2023 Pax Art Awards’ main prize was awarded to the artist duo UBERMORGEN,who have been producing pioneering work in the field of net art since the 1990s and continue to create compelling works, ranging from conceptual to activist, but always involving a critical approach to society and the prevailing system. Johanna Müllerand Giulia Essyadhave also been awarded grants. The two artists use their respective practices to research the functioning of capitalist platforms on the internet, probing the algorithmic control of content and self-expression on social platforms, as well as embarking on in-depth explorations of internet subculture.
We are very pleased to invite you to the first opening of the year: On Friday, 12.01.24, at 19:00,our new curator, Marlene Wenger,will introduce you to the exhibition. Drinks and snacks will be provided by our bistro genusswerk&co, and Ben Kaczorwill set the mood with electronic sounds in the foyer.
One week later, on January 19,you will be able to experience a special night at the HEK: Museum Night Basel !With the motto Handshake and Selfies, we are offering an interactive and exciting program. On our platform, you can control giant robot hands created by the Swiss artist duo AATB,and in the basement, we invite you to take unique selfies with our Superboothinstallation by Tristan Schulze. Thanks to artificial intelligence, this digital work of art will turn your selfies into something extra special. Don’t forget to share your unique pictures under the hashtag #SUPERBOOTHBasel!
Museum Night is also a perfect opportunity to get to know our current exhibitions in more detail. We are offering short but informative spotlight tours through the exhibition «UBERMORGEN, Johanna Müller & Giulia Essyad. Schweizer Medienkunst – Pax Art Awards 2023». Here are the times for the guided tours:
Spotlight UBERMORGEN:Every hour on the hour, starting at 19:00 until midnight, you will experience a 15-minute guided tour through the works of the artist duo UBERMORGEN.
Spotlight Johanna Müller:Every hour at a quarter past, from 19:15 to 00:15, you will be guided through the installation of Johanna Müller.
Spotlight Giulia Essyad:These guided tours take place every hour at half past in Giulia Essyad’s installation, starting at 19:30 until 00:30.
In the workshop room,we are offering you the opportunity to bring your own fantastic 3D creaturesto life using augmented reality.This walk-in/walk-out workshop is suitable for all age groups and requires no prior knowledge.
The perfect musical backdrop will be provided by ievaand DJ Klemenz,who will transform the HEK foyer into a world of electronic beats.
