Getting started with your own metalworking machine shop

Saturday 3rd July, 2021 - Bruce Sterling

*This is of interest if you’ve seen metal works of device art and wonder how they were built.  Commonly they were built with repurposed metalworking equipment in the garage of the artist’s uncle.

*If you really want to lathe and grind metal, there are two things I feel compelled to say about it.  (A) Buy the safety equipment first and use it faithfully and (B) ignore the American references in this video and buy proper metric equipment like everyone else in the world uses.

*As a footnote, at Share Festival we’ve seen remarkable works of device art machined by women.  These women artists often win out Share Prize.  I’d go so far as to say that women machinists are the genuine avant-garde of art machinery: they hack machines with a freshness and originality that impresses our juries no end.   Just: do not get rash and impulsive, like Niki de Saint Phalle, that self-educated and headlong plastics construction artist who ruined her lungs with unventilated plastics fumes.  The world abounds with potential Niki Saint Phalles who are doomed to repeat Niki’s history, when they ought to respect Niki enough to figure out that art machines are genuine life-hazards.
