A design magazine that is literally hard to get

*Obviously that’s part of the appeal, though. If you can’t manage to obtain it, you don’t deserve to read it!

Hi,
welcome back!

The new ARCHIVIO N° 10 – The Design Issue is hot off the press, and we can’t wait for you to discover it.
After the success of The Fashion Issue, now sold out, we are thrilled to announce that the new magazine published by Promemoria Group is about to take over.

This issue continues along the lines of some of our works, the archive for Fornasetti and FontanaArte, where we had the opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of design which has become increasingly aware of the potential that heritage has to offer.

ARCHIVIO N°10, exclusively devoted to Design, is edited by designer Jasper Morrison and Marco Sammicheli, director of the Museo del Design Italiano at Triennale Milano. Under the editorial direction of Daniela Hamaui, the second issue of the third series of ARCHIVIO is designed by Alessandro Gori.Laboratorium.

We are thrilled to launch The Design Issue during an exclusive event at Jasper Morrison Studio during London Design Festival, but, before that, you can find us at Mag to Mag, the International event of independent magazines, on September 14 and 15, at Scalo Farini-Spazio Lampo, in Milan. Here, you will be able to preview and purchase a limited number of copies of The Design Issue, and uncover all about international design archives. An unmissable event, don’t you think?

And we are already on track for Fall events: make sure to meet us at Triennale Milano on October 29, for an in depth presentation of the new issue!

What to expect from the Design Issue?

Inspirational tales, such as the one of Ettore Sottsass, Ottagono’s journey into the world of publishing, Olivetti’s imaginary dialogue with designer Giorgio Soavi, archival stories such as those of Mutina and Tecno and Piero Fornasetti’s atypical collection. And so much more!

ARCHIVIO N°10 explores design in its different forms: from architecture to ceramics, with a specific focus on product design, underlining its ability to be able to combine functionality, art, and the needs of its time, because an object is never just an object.

For our cover and first pages, designer Jasper Morrison assembled an imaginary archive of everyday objects from different places, made at different times, related by character perhaps or a shared understanding of what it is to be an object. The Design Issue also includes a special poster: an (in)complete mapping of the countless (and sometimes unexpected) design archives in Italy. A research by Promemoria Group visually processed by Accurat—an information design agency specializing in data analysis and visual storytelling.

“It is a pleasure for us at Promemoria Group—ARCHIVIO’s editor—to see how the design world and design brands gradually realize the incredible potential of heritage as a strategic asset. There is a growing sensitivity to the subject. Archives, specifically digital archives, allow extraordinary products to come to life inspired by past sketches, technical drawings, models, renders & mock-ups which are always available to creatives; or they keep materials on hand for exhibitions and awards, becoming an organizational advantage for product launches and press.”

Andrea Montorio, CEO Promemoria Group

“Forget about Time, forget about Place, forget about Type, Material, Value, Quality or Condition, an archive can be anything you want it to be, there are no rules. [..] Museums other than ethnological ones, mostly collect important objects, valuable examples of craftsmanship owned by kings and nobles, stored over centuries, unloved and unused in castle corridors. They have typically and unfortunately ignored the more interesting category of things that have been used on an everyday basis.”

Jasper Morrison, Guest Editor

“We have put together an essay on the observation of realities, as the best design archives are precisely those capable of including the unexpected, the things that originate from a living culture of the object, from rigorous manufacturing processes, from fields and sectors that never cease to offer reflections and hybridizations.”

Marco Sammicheli, Editor
