Nikolai Khalezin, playwright and journalist, and Natalia Koliada, founders of the theatre company Belarus Free Theatre, take part in the 7th Share Festival with a conference focused on the genesis of a theatrical text and the difference between truth in real life and truth in art. Their examination and discussion of the topic of this year’s festival—Cops & Robbers—offers a perspective on artistic practices of dissent by which freedom of speech is understood to be the essence of theatre today. Founded in 2005, Belarus Free Theatre is a leading political voice in international theatre, and one of the most powerful bastions of dissent against the repressive regime of Belarus. Despite constant intimidation—their performances have been censured and their activities declared illegal—the theatre company has achieved considerable fame, thanks in part to the support of artists like Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Václav Havel, Kevin Spacey, and Jude Law.
